The Importance of Maintaining Your Tires

JKB Tire Co goes the "extra mile" to ensure our customers get optimum performance from their tires. We recommend that you always adhere to your maintenance schedule outlined in the owner’s manual. Your tires are a major contributing factor when it comes to vehicle performance, so maintaining your tires will protect your investment.

Measuring tire pressure, having your tires rotated, balancing the tires, and choosing the correct set of tires for replacements will contribute to your vehicle's performance. Many people aren't aware of how important extending the life of your tires is.

Stay on Top of Tire Maintenance With These Tips

  • Ensure that your tires are properly inflated by checking the tire pressure. Underinflation usually leads to excess heat, uneven tire wear, and a decrease in handling and braking capabilities. This can easily cause structural failures such as tread separation and blowouts. If the tires are properly inflated, the tread life will be maximized, the handling of the vehicle will be improved, and fuel efficiency will be increased. This contributes to overall driver safety.
  • Always follow the tire rotation schedules as outlined in the owner's manual. Routinely rotating your tires will equalize front-to-rear and side-to-side tire wear. Please note that rotating your tires will not prevent nor circumvent wear issues if the cause is related to worn mechanical components.
  • It's essential to always balance your tires when needed. Out-of-balance tires are noticeable at higher speeds and may be detected in bumps. Always make sure your tires are balanced during the initial installation and during a remount.
  • Ensure that your tires are always installed in sets or pairs. Simply adding one new tire to the rotation cycle can easily create instability and thus result in vehicle handling issues. When you need new tires, it's best to have two new tires installed simultaneously at the rear of the vehicle while moving partially worn tires to the front.
  • When it's time to store your tires for the next season, keep them in a dark place with low humidity. Exposing them to direct sunlight, solvents, grease, oil, or ozone-producing electrical equipment can have a deteriorating effect.
  • This goes without saying, but look for abnormal tire wear or damage, and watch for signs of punctures, cracks, bulges, or embedded objects.
  • Have a spare tire handy, and make sure it's properly inflated so that it's ready for an emergency.

We recommend that you take all these tips into consideration when your tires are serviced. The Rubber Manufacturer's Association (RMA) recommends you take at least five minutes each month to check your vehicle's tires.

There are a variety of mechanical issues that may contribute to uneven tire wear, so to maximize tire life and vehicle performance, it's best to remedy issues ASAP.

You can remain safe when you travel, have better fuel economy, and extend your tire life when you take proper care of your tires. This will also positively impact the environment. Give us a call if you'd like to know more about tire care. We're a family-owned and locally operated company.
