Top Tire Maintenance Tips

Sep 13, 2023

The best way to extend the lifespan of your tires is to properly maintain them. This also helps to decrease the chances of tire-related issues happening, such as flat tires or blowouts. While you may be familiar with some maintenance tips, you may not know as many of them as you think. Read on to find out everything you should know about maintaining yours from a local tire store.

Inflate Your Tires to the Recommended PSI

You should check the PSI on your tires every month to two months. Check your owner's manual or look on the side of your driver's door when it's opened to find out what the manufacturer of your vehicle states the recommended PSI is for the tires on your vehicle. You should then inflate them to that PSI, being careful not to over- or under-inflate them.

Inspect Your Tires for Signs of Damage

It's also recommended that you take the time to inspect your tires for signs of damage as you check the PSI and inflate them. You want to look for things like bubble, bulges, or separating around the wall of the tire. If you notice any of these signs, you likely need to replace the tire.

Check the Tread on Your Tires

The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends changing your tires when the tread is 2/32” or less. The easiest way to tell if you need to replace your tires is to turn a penny upside down and insert it into your tire tread. If the tread covers part of Lincoln's head, you're good to go. If not, they need to be replaced.

Rotate Your Tires

Be sure to routinely have a tire store rotate your tires. According to Consumer Reports, rotating your tires is one of the most important ways to maintain your tires. Most manufacturers recommend that they be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Rotating your tires helps to prevent uneven or premature wear, which helps to extend their lifespan.

Your tires play an important role in the overall function of your vehicle and the smoothness you experience when driving. If you need to have one patched or plugged, need them rotated or aligned, or need yours replaced, a local tire store can help you. When you need tire maintenance, turn to JKB Tire Co.
